Dr. Emory K. Lindquist
~ Chronicling Swedish Augustana Lutheran Lindsborg and Bethany College from their earliest years

Dr. Emory Kempton Lindquist
(1908-1992)
"Fourth" President of Bethany College
(1941-1953)
Picture

Fourth Swedish American Bethany College president Dr. Emory K. Lindquist wrote his heart out for his Lindsborg, his Bethany College and the Smoky Valley Swedes.  He knew time was of the essence to get as much local historical information down for the community and he dived in, beginning in 1953 with the classic Smoky Valley People, A History of Lindsborg, Kansas, and finishing forty years and four books later on these Lindsborg Swedes with Birger Sandzén, An Illustrated Biography in 1993.  During his writing G. N. Malm: A Swedish Immigrant's Varied Career, published in 1989, he lost his central vision.  Yet, he continued on to write the Birger Sandzén masterpiece, although he died before it was published.  These two works he acknowledges would have never been written had it not been for the selfless help of his dear wife, Irma, and dear brother, Ermal.

Considering all of the writings he accomplished, it becomes clearer of his and his family sacrifices to ensure that his hometown of Lindsborg and his Bethany College and the Smoky Valley communities in general would have their history in-hand for themselves, yet beyond that, so others, especially Swedish America, would know about this most unique and special community.  From his efforts, others have been inspired to write and or to further develop, preserve and promote the Swedishness of Lindsborg and greatly support the art and music programs of Bethany College.

Only through his time away from Lindsborg, after graduating from Bethany in 1930, for three years (1930-1933) as an Oxford University Rhodes Scholar, with all the opportunities and experiences that were made available to him then, there in Oxford, England, with easy travels to the Continent, did this then open up the world to him, giving him a truer perspective on the importance of the very rich cultural heritage found in his own hometown and at his alma mater, as he compared those with what he experienced abroad.  Hence, then, he could write the books that he did from a far clearer and more factual view - and from them, what an anthology he produced!!

"It got him away from Kansas. Studies and travel in Europe gave him a far more adequate perspective of the world but also deepened his feelings for Kansas. Before his departure to Oxford in 1930, Emory had never been east of Kansas City. He had to feel a great sense of excitement."  This is a quote from his daughter, Beth, from the first chapter, "A Defining Moment," in the 1998 book, The Difference He Made:  A Biography of Emory K. Lindquist, by good friends Rev. Emmet E. Eklund and Marion Lorimer Eklund, published by Bethany College Press.   (I discovered this wonderful book while surfing ARCHIVE.ORG where you can read it HERE.)

When given this Rhodes Scholar honor, Dr. Lindquist's verbal response was one of gratefulness to God, as also found in this first chapter when he remarked, "There is no personal credit on my own, for we must remember that whatever we ourselves have, God has given us."

Dr. Lindquist felt a great sense of responsibility and gratefulness to the community as well, which he so fully rewarded them with, by way of his writings.  Through these, he actually introduced the community of Swedish Lutheran Lindsborg and Bethany College to itself, and then to others beyond the Kansas Smoky Valley borders.

From the outside looking in, he gave readers a remarkable understanding of their own town, his hometown, the college and its most distinguished faculty in the earliest years, its renowned artists and its Messiah Oratorio Society chorus and famous conductors and the phenomenal special events, including visiting dignitaries from the Crown of Sweden, international opera stars and renown musicians, while he highlighted the leaders of course but the unsung leaders as well who built and developed the college considerably, many of their endeavor's of which spilled over to developing Lindsborg.

Had it not been for those eye-opening experiences, Dr. Lindquist eye-opening Smoky Valley books most likely would not have been written, reducing the images of the history of Bethany College and Lindsborg, to less than exceptional in today's world!

Dr. Emory Kempton Lindquist (1908-1992) was the grandson of Swedish immigrants and was born of Swedish American parents Harry Theodore Lindquist and Augusta Amelia Peterson Lindquist who were living in Lindsborg.

He attended school there and graduated from Bethany College in 1930 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in history.  He was an Oxford University Rhodes Scholar from 1930 to 1933, where he received
a bachelor's and a master's degree with major studies in history from Jesus College, before returning to Bethany College where he was hired as a professor of history from 1934 to 1943.  With the retirement of third Swedish American Bethany College President Rev. Dr. Ernst Pihlblad in 1941, Dr. Lindquist became the interim president until 1943 when he was selected to become the fourth Swedish American college president.

He was the first Lutheran Swedish American Bethany College President not to be a Lutheran minister as Dr. Lindquist reports in Bethany in Kansas on page 73, second paragraph:

"At the meeting of the Conference at Kansas City, Kansas, in April, 1942, the college's constitution was amended to provide that the president be a member of the Lutheran Augustana Synod rather than a member of the ministerium.  When this action was ratified by the Conference in the spring of 1943 at Lindsborg, Lindquist was unanimously elected president of Bethany College."

He held this position into the year of 1953 when he resigned to join the Wichita State University Faculty.  His tenure at this university ended sometime in 1978.  Within that time, among other responsibilities, he would serve as a history professor and a dean.  From 1963 to 1968 he would serve as president of the University.*  He also would serve terms as dean at Fairmont College, which is a part of the University.

He married the quite accomplished and gifted Kansas Swedish American Irma Winifred Eleanor Lann, a 1930 Bethany College graduate who majored in Biological Science and then began a teaching career in Kansas, until 1935, when she worked towards completing a Masters of Nursing degree at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at the Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1935.**  The year of their marriage was 1941, the year he was to become the "interim" Bethany College president.  They had two children, both born in Lindsborg: Elizabeth and Kempton.  As a family, they were members of the 1869 Bethany Lutheran Church, a church belonging to the 1860 Swedish Augustana Lutheran Synod.
Conclusions
Dr. Lindquist accomplished much during his life and as a result he was recognized nationally and internationally for his great contributions as a Swedish American historian and writer, particularly on his hometown of Lindsborg and his Bethany College.  He was to be one of Swedish America’s leading educators in higher education.  He was to become "the" Swedish American historian on the Lindsborg, Kansas, Smoky Valley people, and on the early Lindsborg Bethany College leaders and the events of those earliest years.

Following is a brief summary of who Dr. Lindquist became and the honors he received after graduating from Bethany College.

- The Lindquist and Deere Connection -
I cannot say that I ever met Dr. Lindquist formally, but I certainly heard his name at the Deere home many times when I would stay over or have lunch there between classes at Bethany from August 1964 to January 1966.  I remember clearly one day before having lunch when my grandmother Nina Sohlberg Fry (Lydia's niece who she photographed as a child, and who had become in charge of the Deere home after Lydia's passing) answering the telephone in the hall alcove and in a loud voice, that would carry to Emil's study on the first floor, saying, "Uncle, it's Emory."

For sure Lydia and Emil knew Emory very well through their affiliation at Bethany College and their memberships at Bethany Lutheran Church.  Emory Lindquist was a true friend and colleague of Emil O. Deere's, and was first his student, and, then, he eventually became his boss, when he was inaugurated as fourth Swedish American President of Bethany College in 1943.
