The American-Scandinavian Association of the Great Plains (ASA-GP) continues to strengthen Lindsborg's Swedish heritage by reaching out to those connected to Scandinavia, to its culture and values. The ASA-GP is a local non-profit organization which started in 1971.
Advancing interest in both sides of the Atlantic, the ASA-GP hosts groups from Scandinavia, presents speakers and sponsors a variety of activities. They are a good source for people across the country to discover more about Scandinavia, and in particular, Swedish traditions. Locally, they often engage visiting Swedish professors and lecturers from Bethany College, bridging the community to the college. The Lindsborg ASA-GP has over 100 members.
2011 has many activities planned for the ASA-GP. The annual ASA-GP dinner and program with the visiting Pearson Distinguished Professor in Swedish Studies is a much anticipated event. Other forthcoming functions and events are a pea soup dinner and program for Lent, Jenny Lind concert reception, Hyllningsfest activities, Jultide at Bethany reception and the annual bus trip for the Christmas smörgåsbord.
The ASA-GP hosts informative tours such as the upcoming visit to the Z-Bar Ranch & Conservatory and Lost Springs where there is historical Scandinavian background. The tour will also take in the 8 Wonders of Kansas! Exhibit in Abilene. Participants enjoy traveling together and discussing their shared history of Lindsborg and Swedish lineage.
The goals of the ASA-GP are to promote cultural exchange between the United States and the Nordic Countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The ASA-GP is in association with the Swedish Council of America (SCA). The SCA mission is "supporting and fostering cooperative relationships between all groups and individuals whose purpose is to promote knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the Swedish heritage in American life and strengthening contemporary cultural and education ties between North American and Sweden."
