In May of 2018, over an eleven day period, he escorted the Bethany College Choir, the Handbell Ensemble and college alumni to Germany and Sweden to perform at various venues while being immerse in the history of Germany's classical composers and the founding of Lutheranism, and in Sweden's history relating to the Lindsborg's Swedes. They performed in Wittenberg, Germany, All Saints' Church, commonly referred to as Schlosskirche (Castle Church) where according to Philip Melanchthon, the Ninety-five Theses were posted by Martin Luther in 1517, the act that has been called the start of the Protestant Reformation. the 95 Theses had been posted by the former Roman Catholic priest Martin Luther in 1517, the act of which began the Protestant Reformation; before arriving to performed in Leipzig, they entered the town of Hale at Thomaskirche), St. Thomas Church a Lutheran church which composers such as Richard Wagner and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and especially Johann Sebastian Bach, worked as a Kapellmeister (music director) and where he is buried. In Sweden they traveled to Upssula, and the Upsulla Catheralae familar to so many of Bethany Luthrean chusrch minisisters and college professors. and they were also able to go to the region of Värmland, home to so many of the Lindsborg immigrants that were lead by its founder to be Pastor Olal Olsson whose Summeno Church visited in Summeno. Another highlight must have been in Summeno at the -- the last Swedish church that Lindsborg Swedish Lutheran founder ministered to before arriving in Lindsborg with his Värmland group.
The beginnings of Dr. Lucas' international traveling conductor tours began during his graduate studies at OU in June of 2004 during the Conductor of the Kansas Ambassadors of Music tour. This found him co-conducting the choir, for a group of more than 100 high school students, as they performed in seven European countries. In 2010, during his tenure at the University of Oklahoma from 2007 to 2013, he was the August chorus master for the International Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria, an annual classical music festival. In 2011, he co-conducted the University of Oklahoma Touring Choir, an ad hoc ensemble comprised of current students and alumni, for a performance tour to France with many venues. ----

His work should have been shown at the grand exhibition The Advent of Modernism at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia , in 1986, but it was not due to Sandzén's work only being know regionally and not nationally WORKING ON THIS 2 1 21
Bethany College art professor, then to become an Artist in Residence until about 1949 totaling 50 years at Bethany. He was the last European trained artist and art professor at Bethany College and in Lindsborg; and he was the most impactful in creating within the community a true appreciation of art and culture. After studies at Skara, Sweden, he attended Lund University, then the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, finishing with renown-to-be artist Anders Zorn there, then traveling on to Paris for a half of year study under trained École des Beaux-Arts Edmond François Aman-Jean, a recognized artist in leading European galleries, before he traveled to Lindsborg's Bethany College to begin his career as an artist. While at Bethany in the early years, he exhibited his art throughout the United States and in Sweden. He was the community's most beloved celebrated artist; his celebrity spread throughout Kansas, the Midwest and to Swedish Americans everywhere and to Sweden. He was a cofounder of the ongoing 1899 Midwest Art Exhibition held annually during the Messiah Festival and founder of the Smoky Hill Art Club in 1913 which at its peak numbered 400. In 1957, after his passing, he was honored by the established Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery; in 1993, the Birger Sandzén, An Illustrated Biography by Dr. Emory Lindquist was published on his life; in 1901 and 1940, he was knighted by the Swedish Crown+ /\
