With the loss of his central vision, Dr. Emory K. Lindquist, nevertheless, continued what would be a 12-year time span to complete his 1993, "Birger Sandzén, An Illustrated Biography." Yet, unfortunately, he did not live to see it published. Most followers of Dr. Lindquist's work might consider this book as his masterpiece on the Swedish art master of the American West landscape. Both the author and the artist were so respected by renowned New York City resident Dr. William H. Gerdts (1929-2020), a foremost authority on American art, that he gladly agreed to write the Foreword on this grand book.
The best way to introduce this book is through the Lindsborg News-Record article on Thursday, April 15, 1993, that introduces the Lindsborg public to this masterpiece. In it you will see such statements as these:
"Lindquist's heart was in the creation of this monumental work, in spite of ... the loss ... of his central vision."
"...Emory was continually fortified and supported for manuscript preparation by his dedicated wife, Irma, and his 'best friend and brother,' Ermal."
"The manuscript owes more to Margaret and Pelham Greenough, Sandzén's daughter and son-in-law, than I am able to express in words."
"Sandzén was a painter whose perceptions of the power and dynamics of color ally him with... leaders in the introduction of post impressionism in America..."
"Sandzén's paintings would have qualified in style and stature for inclusion in the major exhibition held in 1986 at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, The Advent of Modernism . . . . His absence was an oversight at the time of the show, and it appears more so now that Emory Lindquist has define Sandzén so well, his life and his art. Ultimately, Sandzén's greatest and most enduring contribution is his marvelous, inimitable art."

"Sandzén book to be released in early May"
"Birger Sandzén, An illustrated Biography," by the late Dr. Emory Lindquist, which is expected to be the definitive book about the renowned Kansas twentieth century artist, soon will be released by the University Press of Kansas, no later than early May.
"The book will be sold at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, several Lindsborg stores and at many UPK retail outlets.
"Birger Sandzén (1871-1954) was an internationally known painter, watercolorist, and printmaker. An immigrant from Sweden, he spent most of his life living and working in Lindsborg.
"This first edition of Dr. Lindquist's biography of Dr. Sandzén has been published with a subsidy grant from the Birger Sandzén Memorial Foundation.
"The book is the final work by Emory Lindquist, a native of Lindsborg who was a renowned Kansas author, historian, university teacher, and former president of both Bethany College and Wichita State University. Lindquist finished the manuscript before he died on January 27, 1992.
"'In the book I trace his story and the development of his work through his own words, those of his associates, and reviews of art critics.'
"Lindquist spent nearly twelve years on the book, including preparatory research, travels on both sides of the Atlantic, research and interviews, and considerable correspondence.
"The many years of preparation enabled Lindquist to revise and to add insight and additional research while refining the manuscript. This has resulted in an impressive manuscript for both art historians and those who desire to know more about the multifaceted life of Birger Sandzén.
"Lindquist wrote. "My gratitude is great for the assistance and support I have received from many people in preparing this biography of Birger Sandzén. The manuscript owes more to Margaret and Pelham Greenough, Sandzén's daughter and son-in-law, than I am able to express in words. Letters, personal items, interviews, copies of Margaret 's notes and articles on the life of her father constitute basic elements in this study.
"Margaret Sandzén Greenough died March 21, 1993, shortly after she saw and expressed appreciation for finished press proofs of the new book about her father.
"Pelham Greenough was author of "The Graphic Work of Birger Sandzén," published in 1952, and he prepared research on exhibitions in which Sandzén participated. Lindquist acknowledged that Pelham's unpublished catalog of the paintings of Sandzén furnished invaluable assistance. Pelham Greenough died January 18, 1983.
"The foreword for the book has been written by Dr. William H. Gerdts, professor of art history at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. Gerdts is author of numerous exhibition catalogues, magazine articles, and 15 books including the monumental three volume set 'Art Across America: Two Centuries of Regional Painting.'
"Gerdts writes: 'Sandzén was a painter whose perceptions of the power and dynamics of color ally him with those other Americans who have rightly been recognized as leaders in the introduction of post impressionism in America-- artists such as Arthur Dove, John Marin, Alfred Maurer, Marsden Hartley, Max Weber, and others.'
"Gene Larson, president of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Foundation, says: 'The Foundation is extremely pleased and proud to co-publish this book with University Press of Kansas. It is a magnificent biography by Emory Linquist. We are convinced that the book will enlighten and entertain those who want to know more about Sandzén, the respected artist and teacher--as well as more insights into his strong and dedicated life, which was spent promoting art for common people. The story of Birger Sandzén has many aspects, not the least of which is his love of Kansas colors, trees, rivers, and the Rocky Mountains and the Southwest landscapes and rocks. This is a definitive record of Sandzén's life and work.'
"Larry Griffiths, director of Lindsborg's Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, says: 'We are thrilled with recent responses to the news that the book soon will be here. Some people have seen an advanced copy of the book, and we could not be more pleased and honored with this biography. Lindquist's heart was in the creation of this monumental work, in spite of some adversities including loss in the last few years of his central vision. No scholar has been more knowledgeable about Sandzén than Emory Lindquist.
"'Through the years, Emory was continually fortified and supported for manuscript preparation by his dedicated wife, Irma, and his 'best friend and brother, Ermal. This soon to be released book is also a tribute to them,' Griffiths added.
"A public program and reception entitled. "An Appreciation," at which Irma and Ermal Lindquist will be special guests, is scheduled for Sunday, May 9, at 3:00 p.m. at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery.
"More information, including advance order forms and mail order forms, is available at the Gallery."
