"LINDSBORG -- The fame of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on the Bethany College campus has spread around the world.
"Since June 7, almost. 2000 people from 42 states, the District of Columbia, and 14 foreign countries have visited the gallery, named in honor of the late doctor BIrger Sandzén, famous artist and instructor at Bethany College.
"Each year, thousands of visitors tour the gallery. Each year, too, the total rises as the gallery gains in popularity.
Famous Artists
"The work of many famous artists have been exhibited through the combined efforts of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Pelham Greenough, 3rd. Dr. Greenough is chairman of the gallery's board of directors. Mrs. Greenough is the daughter of the late Dr. Sandzén.
"The gallery was opened in the fall of 1957. It is a brick and glass building incorporating the latest in design and lighting arrangements for galleries, and entirely air conditioned for visitors' comfort.
"Ten exhibit areas and a courtyard containing "Little Triton," a fountain and the only major work in Kansas by the late Swedish sculptor, Carl Milles, comprise the gallery.
Thorsen Room
"The Thorsen Room for Oscar Thorsen, professor emeritus of piano at Bethany College, is the largest exhibit area. In this room hang many of the paintings of Dr. Sandzén. With the addition of seats, the room is converted quickly into a small recital hall.
"It is equipped with a grand piano and high fidelity sound for record listening. [Swedish-born piano professor Thorsen was a great friend of Dr. Sandzén's.]
"Another of the exhibit areas is the library, the shelves of which hold a growing collection of art books. In this area and others, the art shows are changed frequently.
"William Allen White, noted Kansas journalist, made this remark about Dr. Sandzén: 'He has come from the plains where things grow rank and strong; from Kansas where he has interpreted ugliness, disharmony, monotony, in terms of beauty and yet faithfully and with affectionate wisdom.'

On a personal note, these friends, on Friday's after leaving the Gallery would drop over across the street at the Deere home at 344 North First to visit my mother, Lois Cochran. There were several times I was there when they came over. Margaret always sat in the chair and Pelham on the footstool, and we all enjoyed wonderful conversations. They were family friends and very special people to us, and to the community of Lindsborg, as you will see.
