Whoever could go would go from Lindsborg and from Bethany College to Saint Louis to see the Louisiana Purchase Exposition also known as the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904. Deere was able to go and brought home with him two souvenirs, that of a booklet containing the speech given by President Theodore Roosevelt opening the Fair, and a booklet introducing the world to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. which had been established in 1846.
In that grandeur and wonder of the exciting venues with their architectural marvels, being seen by Deere and nearly 19.7 million persons within a seven month period, would come, in time, to the Lindsborg Bethany College Campus, a Swedish manor house or "herrgard" which has been cherished since and known to all as the Swedish Pavilion.

The Fair celebrated the centennial of President Thomas Jefferson’s deal with Napoleon Bonaparte of France of paying to him, in 1803, $15 million for 600 million acres of the Louisiana Territories, known as the Louisiana Purchase Treaty. News of this took until 1804 to reach St. Louis, at which time Jefferson’s exploration team, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, had departed St. Louis to map the new American lands west of the Mississippi River.
To commemorate the centennial of the signing of the Louisiana Purchase Treaty, the dedication ceremonies for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition were held April 30, 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech. One year later his speech was reprinted in a souvenir booklet format when Roosevelt officially opened this international exposition on April 30, 1904 which would run until December 1, 1904.

"The Smithsonian Institution, established on August 10, 1846, "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge," is a group of museums and research centers administered by the Government of the United States. The institution is named after its founding donor, British scientist James Smithson. Originally organized as the "United States National Museum," that name ceased to exist as an administrative entity in 1967." -- from Smithsonian Institution website.
