"Services to be held Thursday afternoon for Margaret S. Greenough.
"Margaret Sandzén Greenough was born June 16, 1909, daughter of the renowned Birger Sandzén, deceased artist and professor, Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas, and Alfrida (Leksell) Sandzén. Margaret earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bethany College in 1931 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1932. She was a scholarship student at Stevens College in 1926-1928 and received their alumnae award in 1962. Margaret received a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship to attend Columbia University, New York, New York and was granted a Master's Degree in Art History in 1941. She also studied in Paris, France, under Edouard Leon in 1933-1934. Margaret married Charles P. Greenough, 3rd, on November 28, 1942 and continued to teach art at Bethany College in 1934-1936 and during World War II from 1942-1946.
"During the 1930s, 40s and 50s, Margaret Greenough gave innumerable talks throughout the States in Swedish arts and crafts, graphic arts, artists of Lindsborg and the art and life of her father, Birger Sandzén. She enjoyed meeting guests in the gallery and giving impromptu tours and relating interesting stories and details about each painting on exhibition.
"In the past, Margaret Greenough's art has been included in exhibitions throughout the Midwest and occasionally to the National Association of Women's Artists Exhibitors in New York. Mrs. Greenough especially enjoyed painting portraits of her Lindsborg friends and neighbors. Most of those chosen for portraits were first, second and third generation Swedes. Ill health forced her to stop painting several years ago. Her portrait paintings continue to be very popular in exhibitions in the gallery.
"Through the generosity of her husband, Charles P. Greenough, 3rd, and herself, the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery was built on the campus of Bethany College in 1957 in honor of the late Dr. Birger Sandzén, artist and educator at Bethany College.
"Margaret Greenough was vice president of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Foundation and has been active in the management of the gallery and a benefactor to the foundation since its founding.
"Margaret Greenough received the Bethany College Alumni Award of Merit in 1964. Her husband, Charles P. Greenough, 3rd, received an honorary doctorate from Bethany College in 1956 and Margaret received an honorary doctorate in 1981.
"Her husband, Charles P, Greenough, 3rd, passed away January 18,1983, after a brief illness.
"In October 1991, Margaret S. Greenough was honored by the King of Sweden with the medallion of the Polar Star, translated as the Royal Order of the North Star. The prestigious honor was conferred by the Swedish Ambassador to the United States, Anders Thunberg, upon instructions from King Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden.
"Margaret died Sunday, March 21,1993 at the Bethany Home, Lindsborg. Survivors include cousins. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 1993 at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Lindsborg, the Reverends Herbert N. Johnson, Jr. and Stanley Swanson presiding. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg. Memorials may be given to the Bethany Lutheran Church, the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, or to the Messiah Chorus Endowment Fund, all of Lindsborg."
