"Campus Life"
A family like atmosphere was established in the very beginning at Bethany College and continues to this day! During his presidency, Dr. Arvin Hahn* who handed me my Bachelor of Arts Degree on the stage of Presser Hall in 1968, coined Bethany as "A Retreat for Learning" and "Someplace Special" -- and, that is what it continues to be!
Scrolling down you will get a glimpse of "campus life" captured by Lydia's camera as she lived her life on campus at the Lane Hart Hall working as the Dean of Women and Matron of the young ladies of the college from 1906 into the year 1913, while at home in Sohlberg House until 1920, when at home then, in Old Main, as the wife of Dean Emil O. Deere where they lived until 1940.
Lydia's founding the Bethany Campus Association in 1912, the primary purpose of which was to beautify the grounds of the college, was surely motivation enough for her to take the landscape and building photographs.
