Part I

"...Perhaps these observations will lamely suggest rather than actually tell what I am trying to say – – namely that Bethany College, during 40 years -- under the guidance of Ernst Pihlblad -- has remained a vital force in my life rather than a chapter that is finished and laid aside. I have no idea how he did it, for the ways of a college president are a mystery to me. I knew Dr. Swensson only one year, but to me he lives and out of the latter day shall stand. I knew Dr. Pihlblad 40 years, and he was hand-in-hand with his predecessor and mentor. They live, and they keep striding forward over the hills of infinity, "gentle men unafraid," having performed and maintained a miracle on the Kansas plain, where haze of the Smoky Hills rest like a benediction upon the graves of my father and mother and a great silent congregation of the valley."

"... Remember your dad is a fine and splendid leader in church, state, and in the educational field, if you will but remember him especially, as a follower of a great savior. Remember him, as a true Christian friend and father. Remember him, as a truly great Christian gentleman..."

          Grant us the peace, O Lord,
          Throughout our daily life,
          Our balm in sorrow, and our stay in strife;
          And when Thy voice shall bid our conflict cease,
          Call us, O Lord, to Thine eternal Peace. 
          AMEN

The Obituary, by Dr. Victor Spong, Bethany '10, President, Kansas Conference, Lutheran Church, Kansas City, Missouri

"
At this time there looms before the Bethany family, two illustrious figures: Dr. Carl Swensson, the founder, who stands in the Bethany background, and only a few of us taking part in the service can feel his personal touch. Fresh upon the horizon stands Dr. Pihlblad's figure. With a pull on our heart strings, and a tender touch of our hands, we shall, in a few moments, unite in committing the remains of our beloved friend, our esteemed teacher, and our consecrated leader to the rest and peace of Mother Earth. But this we know, that his noble soul by grace and grace alone has entered into the inexpressible peace, joy, and glory of the children of God, which is begun on earth and made perfect in Heaven. Peace on Dr. Pihlblad's memory."

The Service
"Funeral services were held in Presser Hall at 2:30 p.m. on the Bethany campus on Monday, December 13, 1943 for Dr. Ernst F. Pihlblad, who passed away on Thursday, December 9, while attending a regular meeting of the state merit system board at Topeka.  A brief service was conducted at the late home at 2:15 p.m.

Hundreds of people from Lindsborg, the surrounding communities and the entire state very nearly filled the main floor of Presser Hall and overflowed into the balcony.  As the crowd sat in Presser Hall Dr. Pihlblad's friends meditated on the many things he had done to help Bethany College and the community at large.  His activities and influence did not stop there but extended on throughout the state of Kansas, the Augustana Lutheran Synod, and into a wide area..."

"… The generation that helped to found Bethany is passing away, but Bethany will live and prosper if the spirit of the pioneers still stirs within the children.  Former students have learned with joy of plans to honor and preserve the names of Carl Swensson and Ernst Pihlblad by memorials, symbolizing their service. Surely, friends of Bethany and of these men, will eagerly await the official announcement of the details and be willing to have a part in the realization of these memorials."
